Enslaved Black people would be whipped in front of everyone to see as a form of punishment and a warning to other enslaved Black people. As a tactic to humiliate the one being whipped, if a man, they would be stripped completely naked. If a woman, she would be stripped down to their waist to keep their modesty but to also humiliate them for the exposure of her breasts.
This was also known as Flogging
This heavy collar was worn by enslaved Black people who attempted to run away. This collar made it extremely difficult for them to sleep, ultimately sending a message to other enslaved Black people to prevent them from trying to run away.
The long rods sticking out made it hard for the victim to try to run away again because the rods would get stuck in bushes and between trees.
